Settings
Press F1 to open ReCarbon’s Settings at any time: in the game, in menus, during a race. On a Mac keyboard F1 is the brightness key, so press Fn+F1, or Cmd+,. On a controller, press View + Menu (Back + Start) together.
- Tabs: Q / E or LB / RB.
- Rows: the arrows, the D-pad or the left stick choose a row and change its value.
- Close: Escape or B.
Changes apply at once unless marked restart. They are saved to settings.toml in
~/Library/Application Support/ReCarbon/. An environment variable (for example
RECARBON_AA=0) wins over the file for that run, and the menu shows it.
Display
- Fullscreen
Fill the screen with a borderless window. Off: a resizable window.
[video] fullscreen = falseRECARBON_FULLSCREEN- V-Sync
Show each frame on a display refresh. Off can tear, but frames appear sooner.
[video] vsync = trueRECARBON_VSYNC- Frame Rate
Auto: 60, or 30 while the device is hot or can't hold 60. A steady 30 feels smoother than a shaky 60 (the Steam Frame's headset). The game keeps its speed.
[video] frame_rate = "60"RECARBON_FRAME_RATE- Aspect Ratio
Fill other screen shapes: a wider view on an ultrawide, a taller one on a Steam Deck or a 4:3 iPad, the HUD at 16:9. Or 16:9 with bars.
[video] aspect_ratio = "auto"RECARBON_ASPECT- Brightness
Lighter or darker shadows and mid-tones, a gentle step at a time, as a TV's brightness. Black and white stay put. 0 is the original picture.
[video] brightness = 0RECARBON_BRIGHTNESS- Xbox 360 Display Gamma
The gamma ramp the game itself sets for a real Xbox 360's TV output: a little deeper shadows and brighter mid-tones, as on the console. Off: a flatter picture.
[video] xbox_display_gamma = trueRECARBON_DISPLAY_GAMMA
Graphics
- Anti-Aliasing
Smooth jagged edges (an FXAA-style pass).
[video] anti_aliasing = trueRECARBON_AA- Upscaling
How the game's picture is enlarged to the window. Bicubic is sharp, bilinear softer. FSR 1 (AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 1) keeps curves, wires and diagonals smooth when the window is much larger than the Internal Resolution (1x on a 1440p or 4K screen), for a little more GPU time.
[video] scaling = "bicubic"RECARBON_SCALING- Sharpening
Extra sharpness for bicubic and FSR 1 upscaling (for FSR 1, the share of its sharpening pass's full strength). 0 turns it off.
[video] sharpening = 0.3RECARBON_SHARPEN- Anisotropic Filtering
Keeps roads and walls sharp at a distance. Auto: 16x on a dedicated GPU or an M-series iPad, 4x on other integrated ones.
[video] anisotropic_filtering = "auto"RECARBON_ANISOTROPY- Mipmaps
Use the game's smaller textures in the distance, so they don't shimmer.
[video] mipmaps = trueRECARBON_TEXTURE_MIPS- Internal Resolution
Render the 3D scene above the 360's 720p. 1.5x is 1080p, a little over half the pixels of 2x. Auto: from the screen (1440p: 2x, or 3x2 filling an ultrawide).
[video] internal_resolution = "auto"RECARBON_RESOLUTION
Audio
- Master Volume
The volume of all game audio.
[audio] master_volume = 100RECARBON_VOLUME- Mute
Silence all game audio.
[audio] mute = falseRECARBON_MUTE- Mute in Background
Silence the game while its window isn't focused.
[audio] mute_in_background = falseRECARBON_MUTE_UNFOCUSED
Input
- Stick Deadzone
How far a stick moves before the game sees it. Raise it if the car steers by itself.
[input] stick_deadzone = 0.08RECARBON_DEADZONE- Trigger Deadzone
How far a trigger is pressed before it counts.
[input] trigger_deadzone = 0.02RECARBON_TRIGGER_DEADZONE- Vibration
Controller rumble.
[input] vibration = trueRECARBON_VIBRATION
Controls
One row per Xbox 360 control, each with two keys. See Controls and the Garage.
Controller
Advanced
- Asynchronous Shaders
Skip an object for a frame or two while its shader compiles, instead of stuttering.
[advanced] async_shaders = trueRECARBON_ASYNC_PIPELINES- Performance Overlay
Show the frame rate and frame time in a corner of the screen.
[advanced] performance_overlay = falseRECARBON_PERF_OVERLAY
Advanced also has Save Bug Report, Check for Updates, the build's version and commit, and the legal notice. The footer's last button is Quit Game, which asks first.
